The Arabs saw the highest art in brevity; That is, focus, while the West sees richer art in exaggeration, i.e. analysis... If we could reconcile the two theories, and combine the two arts... the result would have been more complete and the benefit more general.
This is what I took to myself when I put this book in 1938 in that framework that shows us a picture of the Arab society in that era, we can almost touch it and close relatives with what we see today in some neighborhoods of our cities and the customs of our society.
The owner and the tenant and the relationship between them... the bathroom and his customers, the barber and his nature... All these images of social life as they appeared from ancient Arabic literature, I was impressed by the natures and people I saw that the most prominent of them besides the character of “Ashaab”... So I followed his traces and breathed his news And I started collecting his anecdotes from the books of the ancients... and mixed them, mixed them, and cooked them.
I got meat, beans, spices, and bazaars from the stores of four famous people: Al-Jahiz, Ibn Abd Rabbo, Al-Khatib Al-Baghdadi and Badi Al-Zaman. It really fascinated me and salivated what I found in them of pleasures and antics... So I filled my hands with what I chose from their delicacies and took it to an artistic “kitchen”; Where I mixed it and mixed it and made it into one "dough", from which I made this story that is connected to the chapters.
