The second part of Naguib Mahfouz's famous trilogy, considered by many critics and literary specialists to be the best and most important Arabic novel.
This part deals with the period following the 1919 revolution in the life of Sayed Ahmed Abdel Gawad's family, where Sayed isolated himself for five years after the martyrdom of his son Fahmy, until he finally decided to come out of his isolation and go back to staying up late at the house of the scholar Zubaida, where he is surprised by Zenouba, who has become a mature woman.
He falls in love with her and buys her a houseboat overlooking the Nile. At the same time, his eldest son Yassin falls in love with her and enters his father's world through the back door, while Kamal lives a platonic love story with his beloved Aida. The novel was published in 1957 and made its way to the big screen in 1967.
